Privacy and cookies

This page explains what information Loline Mag (lolinemag.com) collects when you read, sign in or get in touch, why we collect it, and the choices you have. Loline Blog (lolineblog.com) is covered by its own policy.
The short version
- You can read Loline Mag without an account.
- We only measure how stories are read (Google Analytics, Microsoft Clarity and our own reading analytics) if you accept analytics. If you reject it, none of these load.
- Personalized recommendations are off unless you turn them on in your account, and you can delete your reading history at any time.
- We don't sell your information or use it for advertising.
Information you give us
- Your account. Your full name, username, email address and password, or your Google account details if you sign in with Google. We use these to run your account and show your name with your comments.
- Comments and claps. What you post or clap on a story is linked to your account.
- Newsletter. Your name and email address, to send the newsletter. Every email has an unsubscribe link.
- Contact form. Your name, email address and message, so we can reply.
Information collected when you read
- View counts. When you open a story we add one to its view count. Your browser remembers which stories it counted for six hours so the same view isn't counted twice. This count isn't linked to you.
- Only with your consent: analytics. If you accept analytics, we measure how our stories are read, for example how long you actively read, how far you scroll, and which recommended stories you see and click.
- Google Analytics (Google) gives us statistics such as visits, pages read and where readers come from.
- Microsoft Clarity (Microsoft) shows how pages are used, including clicks, scrolling and recordings of sessions, so we can fix design problems.
- Our own reading analytics record the story, active reading time, scroll progress and recommendation interactions, grouped by random visit IDs. They don't store your IP address, browser details or the pages' addresses, and are deleted after 30 days.
- Personalized recommendations (optional). If you're signed in, accept analytics and turn on personalized recommendations in your account, the stories you read are linked to your account to recommend others. This reading history is kept for 30 days. Turning personalization off deletes it, and you can also delete it at any time from your account.
- Security. Google reCAPTCHA checks sign-ins for automated abuse.
Cookies and similar storage
Cookies are small files your browser stores for a website. We use a few that the site needs to work, and analytics cookies only if you accept them.

You can change your analytics choice at any time: . Withdrawing it stops analytics from then on. It doesn't delete statistics already collected, but it stops anything new.
Who else processes your information
- Google: Google Analytics, Google sign-in and reCAPTCHA (Google's privacy policy).
- Microsoft: Microsoft Clarity, only with your consent (Microsoft's privacy statement).
- Our hosting providers, which run the website and store its data on our behalf.
We don't sell your information to anyone.
How long we keep information
- Your account, comments and claps: until you ask us to delete them.
- Newsletter: until you unsubscribe.
- Contact messages: as long as needed to deal with them.
- Our reading analytics and your reading history: 30 days.
- Google Analytics and Microsoft Clarity: according to their retention settings and policies.
Your choices and rights
- Accept or reject analytics, and change your mind at any time, in .
- Turn personalized recommendations on or off, or delete your reading history, in your account.
- Ask us for a copy of your information, to correct it, or to delete your account, by emailing contact@lolinemag.com.
We handle your information in line with applicable data protection law, including Ethiopia's Personal Data Protection Proclamation.
Children
Loline Mag isn't aimed at children, and we don't knowingly collect information from children without a parent's consent.
